#09: Where do you see yourself five years from now?

TRAPS: One reason interviewers ask this question is to see if you’re settling for this position, using it merely as a stopover until something better comes along. Or they could be trying to gauge your level of ambition.

If you’re too specific, i.e., naming the promotions you someday hope to win, you’ll sound presumptuous. If you’re too vague, you’ll seem rudderless.

BEST ANSWER: Reassure your interviewer that you’re looking to make a long-term commitment…that this position entails exactly what you’re looking to do and what you do extremely well. As for your future, you believe that if you perform each job at hand with excellence, future opportunities will take care of themselves.

Example: “I am definitely interested in making a long-term commitment to my next position. Judging by what you’ve told me about this position, it’s exactly what I’m looking for and what I am very well qualified to do. In terms of my future career path, I’m confident that if I do my work with excellence, opportunities will inevitable open up for me. It’s always been that way in my career, and I’m confident I’ll have similar opportunities here.”

One cannot accurately predict what the job or the company will look like in 5 years time. You can answer in general terms about the type of situation you would like to be in and the way you want to have grown and developed. Avoid giving specific time frames or job titles.

In five years I hope to be in a role that impacts and contributes to my company. I am interested in a creative and challenging work environment that will best utilize my team building and problem solving skills. I am hoping that my background in real estate will lend to my growth and success. As I grow in my incoming and subsequent roles I hope to bring others up the ladder/provide to the personal and professional growth of the junior team members. I want to be the employee that is remembered for the problems that became solutions and the unattainable became a reality. Maybe I will be somewhere in between but I will be positioned as a long term and valued employee. That's where I want to be.

Five years from now I see myself as a marketing manager. I am going to be learning and gaining experience until then. I know there are a lot of things to learn, but I’m going to be working hard for the next five years. I Know opportunity knock the door of great workers and I’m going to try to be one of them.

Five years down the line, I see myself much more knowledgeable than I am today. If selected by your company, I would strive hard to learn as much as I can about the mining projects that I am assigned. The technical and managerial skills that I have gained during my stay here would certainly help me to attain my goal and grow at a fast pace in the company.

Peter Griffin actually says, "Doing your son."

licking the cum from that HR that interviews

They want to know that you want to be successful. they don't need to know that you want to be "a manager" or "a ceo" or any of that stuff. I've found best response is: I want to be working in a position where I am successful and valued.

BUT I've never interviewed for a job like sales where ambition is what they are looking for... so I guess it also depends on the company you are interviewing for :) good luck!
